This study discuss the use of publicity for crime prevention purposes. Beginning by suggesting a way of classifying the different types of publicity that may be used for preventing crime, the crime prevention theory underlying the different approaches and was debated alongside with some examples of campaigns that have been implemented. The role of well planned publicity campaigns in crime reduction seems clear. However, a number of questions remain unanswered. For example, what types of media work best and in what situations? To examine these sorts of questions requires the availability of reliable data. In addition to data on levels of crime, data on what sort of publicity was used, when, and what else was going on at the same time, would be required. Having evaluated various crime prevention schemes, the problems associated with obtaining such data were identified. The research concerned with anticipatory benefits shows that reductions in crime can be realised even before crime prevention activity commences, particularly where forthcoming activity is publicized prior to implementation. Thus, the question exists as to whether publicized phantom schemes (fictitious interventions that are never implemented) could reduce crime. The ethics of adopting such a strategy would, of course, require careful thought. In any event, the timing of pre-scheme publicity and the implementation of an intervention should be carefully considered to maximize the potential effects of anticipatory benefit. More research in this area could provide useful insights into specifically when such benefits are realised and how they might be extended.
