Uzbek language is officially written in Latin alphabet after the shifts from Cyrillic to Turkic Latin, and from Turkic Latin to English Latin alphabets. During the time, functions of some characters changed and unnecessary characters were deleted. In this article, not only the relationship between Uzbek Latin letters and the phonological system is analyzed, but also problems of the current writing system are discussed.
In the previous studies such as Kim(2000), Jung(2011), Landau & Kellner-Heinkele(2012), Son(2016), political and historical backgrounds of the writing system are mainly discussed. This study attempts to do a language internal analysis regarding the relationship between Uzbekistan phonological and writing systems in order to provide a balanced perspective.
Cyrillic alphabet still has been used in Uzbekistan for the last 20 years even though only Latin alphabet is official. In some Uzbek newspaper articles, it is said that the current Latin alphabet is more difficult to use than the previous Cyrillic alphabet. This study evaluates their claims based on language internal factors as well as social and political factors. Finally, this article discusses images of Uzbek Latin alphabet among Uzbek people. Uzbek Latin alphabet functions as a dual symbol to represent both a linguistic meaning and images of the letters.
