This paper is an article that explored Three kinds of calendars(三正) and Twelve monarchs trigrams(12辟卦) debate that took place in China and Joseon dynasty(朝鮮) for “August” Overseeing I‒ching(『周易』臨卦 8月)
In China, the trend of the approach to the “August” Overseeing I‒ching(『周易』臨卦 8월) is three styles, that’s Three kinds of calendars(三正) and Twelve monarchs trigrams(12辟卦) and others(其他易理). The scholar of Han dynasty(漢代) claims Withdrawal(遯卦) as the calendars of Chou dynasty(周曆). The scholar of Tang dynasty(唐代) claims Obstrution(否卦) as the calendars of Yin dynasty(殷曆). The scholar of Sung dynasty(宋代) claims Withdrawal(遯卦) as the calendars of Chou dynasty(周曆), claims Overseeing(觀卦) as the calendars of Hsia dynasty(夏曆) and others.
The scholar of Joseon dynasty(朝鮮) was the sign to move away from thinking of China. Typically Kwon Geun(權近) saw Three kinds of calendars(三正)과 Twelve monarchs trigrams.(12辟卦) with ancillary issues had tried to solve the problem of the “August” Overseeing I‒ching(『周易』臨卦 8月) as Yin‒Yang(陰陽).
Jeong(丁若鏞) is particularly telling the calendars of Chou dynasty(周曆) with the mutation of I‒ching(變易論), Lee(李炳憲) said that this “August” Overseeing I‒ching(『주역』臨卦 8月) as a makeshift of Twelve monarchs trigrams(12벽괘변통론). From Kwon Geun to Lee, This attitude can be called a cross‒section of the original spirit of Joseon dynasty(朝鮮) outside the Chinese thought.

유가 경전에서 언급되는 월(月建)과 정삭(正月)이 삼정(三正: 하은주 삼대의 책력) 가운데 어느 시대인지 알기 위해서는 주의를 요한다. 삼정은 각각 1개월의 차이가 있다. 『주역』의 경우는 달(月)에 대한 언급이 한군데 있으니 임괘(臨卦, [괘는 본문참조]) ‘8월’이다. ‘8월’이 삼정 가운데 어느 시대인지에 대한 문제는 맹희의 12벽괘론이 수용되면서 논란이 가열되었다.
중국의 경향을 보면 ‘8월’을 삼정과 12벽괘 및 기타 역리로 접근한다. 후한대에는 주력(周曆)의 입장에서 ‘8월’을 미월(未月) 돈괘(遯卦, [괘는 본문참조])라 했고, 당대에는 ‘8월’은 은력(殷曆)으로 신월(申月) 비괘(否卦, [괘는 본문참조])라 했다. 송·원대에는 주력으로 미월 돈괘라는 설과 하력으로 유월(酉月) 관괘(觀卦, [괘는 본문참조])라는 설 및 기타 설로 나누어졌다.
조선의 경우 중국의 역학관에서 탈피하려는 조짐이 나타났다. 대표적으로 권근은 삼정이나 12벽괘는 부차적인 것으로 보고 역의 본령인 음양으로 ‘8월’의 문제를 해결하려 했다. 유정원도 ‘8월’은 삼정과 무관하고 달수와도 무관한 음양소식의 원리라고 했다. 삼정으로 논한 학자 중 주력으로는 정약용과 심대윤을, 은력은 이익을 들 수 있다. 하력은 송시열과 정조를 들 수 있다. 이런 조선 학자들은 중국의 역학논리에 크게 구애받지 않고 자유롭게 자신들의 역학사상을 전개한다. 특히 정약용은 변역론으로 주력을 말하고 이병헌은 12벽괘의 새로운 변통론으로 ‘8월’이 은력이 되는 이론을 제시했다. 권근을 위시하여 이병헌에 이르기까지 임괘 ‘8월’을 해석하는 이런 새로운 자세에서 조선 역학사상의 한 단면을 읽을 수 있다.
