This study was conducted to foster water quality management in Paldal waterworks. It evaluates the cause of non-treated wastewater the study presents solutions in managing non-treated wastewater and operating a public wastewater treatment facility during times of rainfall.
Paldang waterworks had been polluted due to feeble wastewater pipes, and operation efficiency of the wastewater treatment facility had been low. Since 2001, a tremendous sum of 1.4 trillion won had been injected to repair the pipes. As a result, the amount of I/I(Inflow/Infiltration) in times of fine weather has diminished greatly. However in times of rain, a great quantity of I/I flows into the sewage pipes, through the interceptor and into the wastewater treatment facility. Wastewater that exceeds the facility"s handling capacity flows into Paldang waterworks.
For reduction in untreated wastewater during precipitation, there are suggestions for ordering project priority in areas with combined systems and in areas with separate systems. For areas with combined systems, it is appropriate to fully utilize the former wastewater treatment facility"s capacity then reduce pollution load using a simple wastewater treatment facility. Also measures regarding combined sewer overflows should be established.
For areas with separate systems, former wastewater treatment facility needs to be fully utilized, just as the same for combined systems. Then promote wastewater pipe maintenance projects to reduce I/I, and lastly establish measures regarding sanitary sewer overflows.
