This study examines the impact of intra-multinational enterprise (MNE) dynamics on subsidiary mandate change. We explore the complex dynamics of heterarchy relationship by incorporating both cooperative and competitive logics. In mutual mandate operation, we identify that strategic interdependence between subsidiaries significantly affects mandate gain and loss. With focus on both subsidiary and mandate levels, we pay particular attention to competitive dynamics of intra-MNE relations. Based on a sample of 16,385 subsidiaries of 631 Japanese MNEs from 1991 to 2014, the findings confirm that subsidiaries redefine their mandate portfolio in response to strategic moves of other subsidiaries.
