This study is to examine Shinkug activist Hyun-Cheol’s theatre career and his Chosun Actor School(CAS) and actors’ educational activities in the era of the Japanese occupation in the theatersociocultural historical context, from the postcolonial critic’s perspective. He experienced the various popular Shingeki and experimental theater in Tokyo’s Geijutsuza and Geijutsuza Associated Drama School. After that he deployed a cultural-theatrical business for enlightening Chosun people against the colonial reality. However, its practical institutions such as Dongkug Cultural Association and CAS, followed Shimamura’s initiative about the total cultural institute. And the educational system of CAS a projection of the educational system of Tsubouchi’s Institute for Theater. As a result, he had planted the Shinkug as a chaotically hybridized form from the modern theatrical elements of Western and modern Shingeki form of Japan’s Taisho era and the Westernized viewpoint of the theatre in the Korean theater world. This was essentially resulted from a restrictive environment caused by the particular Korean historical situation as a colony under the rule of Japanese Imperialism.
