Background Talent donation has emerged as a new paradigm of donation culture since the 2000s and is proliferating day by day without ascertaining any of the inherent risks. The explosion of design talent donation is no exception in this donation culture. Most of all, various understandings of design talent donation coexist without a clear discernment of concept or criteria. In this situation, there is a risk that the proliferation of design talent donation can cause additional problems. This study aims to present the problems and risks of design talent donation and to help create proper understanding based on a critical perspective of design talent donation.
Methods In this study, relevant cases obtained from newspapers and magazines were found to clarify the issues behind the design talent donation fantasy. Furthermore, these cases were analyzed by the critical descriptive method. There are five results from the analysis.
Results Five risk factors shape design talent donation: First, design talent donation is characterized as good or evil, where it can be misused as a means of ethic-mediated discrimination. Second, design talent donations can enforce time and labor and become a means of exploitation. Third, design talent donation has the potential to be seen as an investment for future transactions because it takes place in the design market structure. Fourth, design talent donation can cause a degradation of the design results by obscuring assessment criteria. Finally design talent donation, which presupposes design ability, has the potential to be exploited as a means of hiding people’s talents.
Conclusions These issues and risk factors were presented as they relate to design talent donation. And these risks can ultimately depreciate design practice and have a negative effect on the design market. Therefore, it would be necessary to prevent the uncritical proliferation of design talent donation and examine it with a balanced view.
