Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate a spring mattress, latex mattress and fiber-string air mattress by using ergonomic variables and psychological questionnaire. Background: Recently, many types of functional mattresses are developed and released. The fiber-string air mattress is newly developed to compensate the rolling movement of water or air bed. Therefore, such function needs to be tested for consumers to choose the right mattress for them. Method: This study used body pressure distribution, EMG, hear rate as quantitative measures, and Likert scale as subjective measure. Also, this study changed the level of air mattress pressure to 6 ㎪, 3 ㎪, 0.5 ㎪ to examine the effect on users. Results: There are significant differences in body pressure distribution and satisfaction level among spring, latex, and fiber-string air mattress, and different trends in the level of EMG and heart rate were found. Conclusion: The latex mattress and spring mattress showed a better performance in pressure distribution and subjective comfort than air mattress in this experimental setting. The air pressure of fiber-string air mattress can influence the level of internal load of low back, body pressure distribution and subjective comfort. This nature of fiber-string air mattress can be used as adjustable pressure mattress for individual who needs a firm support and comfort feeling depending on the personal needs.
