This study examines whether MERS-related interpersonal communication mediates and moderates the relationship between exposure to MERS-related mass media and MERS-preventive behavioral intentions. We surveyed 600 Korean adults aged 19 or older during the 2015 MERS outbreak in South Korea. Regarding the mediating effect of MERS-related interpersonal communication, only face-to-face communication mediated the positive effect of exposure to MERS-related mass media on MERS-preventive behavioral intentions. With regard to the moderating effect of MERS-related interpersonal communication, the effect of interpersonal communication substituted the effect of exposure to MERS-related mass media on cough etiquette intention. Specifically, the exposure effect was much stronger for people with lower levels of face-to-face and online communication than those with higher levels of face-to-face and online communication. In conclusion, interpersonal communication can contribute to overcoming infectious disease crises by mediating and substituting the influence of exposure to mass media on individual behaviors to prevent infectious diseases.
