The present study aims to empirically test and analyze the effects of (1) demographics (gender, age, income, and personal network size on smartphone), (2) smartphone use (daily use time and usage behaviors), and (3) assimilation for peer relations (stress of peer relationship and social connections with peers via smartphone) on adolescents’ smartphone addiction symptoms. Among demographics, girls were more likely than boys to be addicted to smartphone, and income and personal network size also had the effect on addiction symptoms. Regarding smartphone use, the more adolescents had daily use time and entertainment usage behavior, the more likely they were to be addicted to smartphone. However, adolescents’ information-seeking and communication usage behaviors had no effect on addiction symptoms. In terms of assimilation for peer relations, both of stress of peer relationship and social connections had the most effects on adolescents’ addiction symptoms. These results demonstrate that affective factors on friendship maintenance are more influential on adolescents’ addiction symptoms than the other factors used in the study. We can infer from the results that assimilation for peer relations is to avoid feelings of alienation from and conflict with peers. However, adolescents’ efforts to create strong bonds with peers as well as for smartphone-mediated friendship maintenance can occur in the appearance of addiction. Therefore, in order to prevent adolescents’ smartphone addiction symptoms, rather than just restricting use time and usage of smartphone, our focus should shift to the methods where adolescents can have the ability to maintain good relations with peers.
