Lee Jang-yong, the one in charge of the diplomatic relation with Mongol in Won-Jong era, visited the royal court of Mongol four times, prevented wars through excellent negotiations, minimized the burden to mobilize troops, strengthened friendly relations between the two countries, and made a big contribution to recovering sovereign power with the support from Mongol. Moreover, at the moment for Goryeo government to make a crucial diplomatic decision regarding Mongol, he always suggested the best plan and served as the model to practice it himself. He acknowledged the reality of the mid-13th century when Mongol was conquering the East Asian world, penetrated their diplomatic strategies, and judged that Goryeo would be able to preserve its security and independence only when it accepted them. And whenever he negotiated with Mongol, he give priority to perfect and thorough logic and obtained good results. When making conversations with Mongolian men in power, he always led the negotiations with a steadfast attitude, and earned benefits. He was respected and welcomed by high-ranking officials with his great erudition and character. His intimacy and reputation that he had built through active exchanges with them were used as precious assets when he successfully performed diplomatic activities later. In that sense, Lee Jang-yong’s contribution to leading Goryeo’s utilitarian diplomacy in the relation with a big nation, Mongol with his strong sense of calling and extraordinary knowledge and abilities should be highly appreciated.
