The purpose of this study is to explain the realization of two characters' purity in Daisy Miller and The Portrait of a Lady. The international motif is the Henry James' main interest. He usually tries to deal with the problems of Americans living in Europe. In Daisy Miller, there are two types of Americans. One is the orthodox American like Daisy who has a pure and innocent mind. The others are Europeanized Americans like Winterbourne, Mrs. Costello and Mrs. Walker who adhere to tradition and tendency of Europe. Daisy always comes into conflict with Europeanized Americans. They don't show any understanding and generosity to their innocent compatriot Daisy. After her death, everyone realize she had an honest and moral character. Isabel, who represents the 19th century's fresh charming heroin, has a strong independent will and a romantic imagination. She knows many things and has many thoughts but doesn't have any real experience in the severe real life. She doesn't choose the ideal spouse because of her immature understanding of situation. But she willingly takes responsibility of her marriage obligation. We are living in the multi-cultural society because there are many peoples in one country. To live well in that society, we must respect other citizens' tradition and custom. James shows us we must lead a harmonious life with other peoples and carry respectful attitude to different cultures and sense of values through his two works.
