The purpose of this paper is to discuss the concept of PAIN and to propose its semantic domain in the framework of cognitive linguistics. Though the conceptualization of PAIN has been examined in the domain of emotion in few previous cognitive linguistic studies (Kövecses 1990, 2008; Lascaratou 2007, 2008), it is not clear whether PAIN can be treated as an emotion whose subtypes include FEAR, ANGER, HAPPINESS, etc. To further this inquiry, this study looks into the nature of conceptualization of PAIN in comparison with FEAR. An initial analysis of the two concepts in the areas of metonymy and metaphor reveals that PAIN and FEAR are very similar in their conceptualization. However, further probing into the meaning of PAIN shows that PAIN and FEAR are different in terms of a particular type of metonymic expressions and the conceptual metaphors deriving from these metonymies. The 'bodily damaging' modifiers for PAIN provides rich examples for this aspect. Based on this finding, a new semantic domain 'SENSIMOTION' is proposed to properly treat the concept and conceptualization of PAIN.
