Shipping industry is a line of business with a long experience of cultural interaction at sea. Nowadays more than half of the crew members in the Korean merchant vessels is from other countries, and there is a growing interest in the industry in training communication competency of its crew members.
This paper aims to deal with cultural interaction at sea and maritime communication. At first it will try to find out how English is established as ‘lingua franca’ in the global maritime industry by analysing the process of development of communication technology at sea. Then it will define what we mean by ‘maritime communication’. Based on the definition of maritime communication this study will provide an opportunity to get an overview of current state of Maritime English training and education. Furthermore, this paper tries to investigate the development of SMCP the aim of which is to reduce the problem of language barriers at sea and avoid misunderstandings which can cause accidents. Through the analysis of the current situation in terms of SMCP-centered Maritime English education, it could be found out and suggested which kind of improvements and changes in maritime communication training and education could be needed in order to train the future ship officers who are able to demonstrate the competence to communicate effectively in the multicultural working environment as well as to carry out well their responsibilities.
