This study used data envelopment analysis(DEA) to study the operational efficiency of the Korean healthcare system during the period from 2000 to 2013. We selected two output variables, life expectancy at birth and the infant mortality rate, and five input variables: number of physicians and nurses, number of hospital beds, MRI units, and total health expenditure as a percentage of GDP. The use of the DEA method enabled us to evaluate how Korean healthcare systems could improve their technical and scale efficiency on an operational level based on the results we obtained for the period 2000 –2013. The results indicate that, as time passes, Korean healthcare systems are becoming marginally inefficient even though inputs are increasing. This study contributes to the practice of healthcare management and could theoretically improve operational efficiency in the healthcare industry based on the compared efficiency of Korean healthcare systems.
