By implementing a priming paradigm of psycholinguistics, this study investigates the similarity and the difference in real-time lexical access to English homonym such as date by L1 and L2 groups. In particular, this study compares reaction times by the two groups in three experimental conditions such as two semantically related conditions (homonym condition: date-girl, single meaning condition: hospital-doctor) and one semantically unrelated condition (stone-lion). On a computerized task, the L1 and L2 groups judged whether a series of experimental stimuli were real English word or not. Linear mixed-effect models indicated that the L1 and the L2 groups evaluated the stimuli of the two semantically related conditions significantly faster than those of the semantically unrelated condition. With respect to the two group difference, there was no significant interaction of the groups and the experimental conditions. Implications for the L2 mental lexicon were discussed in terms of a possibility of collective representations of meanings of L2 homonyms.
