This paper argues that religious experiences in Akan traditional society have been actively adapted and reinterpreted in Akan Independent Churches. The collision between the missionary religion of Christianity and the traditional religions of Akan Society resulted in the development of Akan Independent Churches. These Churches in Ghana inherit and maintain Akan traditional religious values and concepts while being committed to the Christian gospel as the foundation of the church. The emphasis on Religious experiences and the concept of healing in Akan Independent Churches shows how closely Christian and Akan religious traditions are interwoven together.
The religious experiences of Akan society can be explained in three categories in the Akan language: Okra, Mogya and Odomankoma. Okra means a soul or souls directly responsible for the wellbeing of mind, body, person and society. Okra’s influence reaches the whole Akan society, and the state of illness is conceptualized as a momentary withdrawal of Okra. Mogya is the ‘Blood of Mother’, residing in every member of society. Mogya is a means of healing and shows a close parallel to the blood of Jesus Christ redemptive and binding mechanism of the believing community. Odomankoma is a god in Akan myth. By creating, going through death and later being resurrected, Odomankoma completes the cycle of life and death. Akan people believe death is not the end but the completion of life. Hence the rite of death, a funeral, is paradoxically a service of an ultimate healing.
