This paper is intended as an investigation of the Zen methods used commonly in Linji school(臨濟宗) tradition and the redemption through meeting with pupils, ‘Linji-He(臨濟喝)’, ‘SanXuanSanYao(三玄三要)’, ‘SiBinZhu(四賓主)’, and ‘SiLiaoJian(四料簡)’. The buddhist doctrine of Linji school is continued by Nanyue huairang(南嶽懷讓)-Mazu daoyi(馬祖道一)-Baizhang huaihai(百丈懷海)-Huangbo xiyun(黃檗希運) inheriting the Southern school Zen(南宗禪) of Huineng(慧能), so-called ‘Southern mountain line(南嶽系)’. On this buddhist doctrine line, the Zen thought of Linji school(臨濟宗) had succeeded the Zen thought of The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch(六祖壇經) and especially emphasized ‘Self-nature Self redemption (自性自度)’more independently. It stressed the famous phrase, “Be the host where you are! The place where you are is all true.”
Inevitably, the method of enlightenment through direct meeting with pupils has been in fashion, because Zen Buddhism emphasizes the tradition of ‘the communion of heart with heart’. It is called ‘the redemption through meeting with pupils’ and these characteristics of the method gets shown in Linji Zen(臨濟禪) intensively. The publication of Zen Buddhism such as Rentianyanmu(人天眼目) presents these characteristics, ‘SanXuanSan Yao(三玄三要)’, ‘SiBinZhu(四賓主)’, and ‘SiLiaoJian(四料簡)’ as Zen Buddhism of Linji(臨濟) school, however this paper additionally investigates ‘Linji-He(臨濟喝)’ and ‘SiZhaoYong(四照用)’.
These methods, ‘Linji-He(臨濟喝)’, ‘SanXuanSanYao(三玄三要)’, ‘SiBinZhu(四賓主)’, ‘SiLiaoJian(四料簡)’, and ‘SiZhaoYong(四照用)’ are the instruments for ‘the redemption through meeting with pupils’. These methods originates in Zen Buddhism of Linji(臨濟), and the purpose of them is to enlighten the ultimate truth of Zen.

본고에서는 임제종의 종풍(宗風)과 학인의 제접(提接)에 상용되는 선법(禪法)으로 ‘임제할(臨濟喝)’, ‘삼현삼요(三玄三要)’, ‘사빈주(四賓主)’, ‘사료간(四料簡)’, ‘사조용(四照用)’ 등에 대하여 고찰하였다.
임제종의 법맥(法脈)은 혜능(慧能)의 남종선(南宗禪)을 계승한 남악회양(南嶽懷讓)-마조도일(馬祖道一) - 백장회해(百丈懷海) - 황벽희운(黃檗希運)으로 이어지는 이른바 ‘남악계’이다. 이러한 법맥에 따라 임제종의 선사상은 『육조단경(六祖壇經)』의 선사상을 계승하고 있는데, 특히 『단경』의 ‘자성자도(自性自度)’를 더욱 주체적으로 강조하여 “있는 곳에 주인이 되고, 서 있는 곳이 모두 참됨[隨處作主, 立處皆眞]”이라는 유명한 구절을 강조한다.
선종에서는 ‘이심전심(以心傳心)’을 강조하는 전통을 가지기 때문에 필연적으로 학인들과의 직접적인 대면을 통해 선리(禪理)를 깨우치는 방법이 유행하게 된다. 이를 학인의 제접이라고 하는데, 임제선의 특질은 바로 이러한 학인의 제접의 방편에 집중적으로 나타나고 있다고 할 수 있다. 『인천안목』 등의 선종전적에서는 이러한 임제종 선법의 특질로서 ‘삼현삼요’, ‘사빈주’, ‘사료간’ 등을 제시하고 있지만, 본고에서는 여기에 ‘임제할’과 ‘사조용’을 추가하여 고찰하였다.
이러한 ‘임제할’, ‘삼현삼요’, ‘사빈주’, ‘사료간’, ‘사조용’ 등은 바로 임제종에서 학인들의 제접을 위한 방편(方便)이라고 할 수 있고, 이러한 방편은 바로 임제선의 선사상으로부터 배태되어 출현한 것이라고 말할 수 있으며, 그 목적은 당연히 궁극적인 선리를 깨우치는 것에 집중되어 있다고 하겠다.
