This study focused on what types of functions are involved in Cheoyongmu according to timeline. Through the process, this study found the characteristics of functions in Cheoyongmu, and considered that characteristics of functions in Cheoyongmu are inherent in shamanistic function and artistic function of Byeoksajingyeong. Finally, this study focused on functions of Cheoyongmu chronologically. The final outcomes are following:
In the result of examining functions of Cheoyongmu in Unified Silla era, Cheoyongmu was formed in Unified Silla era, and it was created by Palgwanhoe. This study hereby considered that the characteristics of Cheoyongmu are developed to shamanistic function of Byeoksajingyeong which has strong patriotic function.
In the result of examining functions of Cheoyongmu in Goryeo era, Cheoyongmu was developed in the era. Goryeo era was the era of harmonizing between Buddhism and Confusion and changed to aristocratic circles. Moreover, Korean music of Korean Court was well-organized and dance was refined and specialized. At that time Cheoyongmu was also included. Cheoyongmu was performed in Korean Court and played in Yeondeunghoe and Palgwanhoe. Also, Cheoyongmu was joined with Nuo rituals (Narae), Nuo opera (Nahui), and Sandaejapguek and performed in Korean Court. Compared to characteristics of Cheoyongmu in Unified Silla era, entertaining function and artistic functions was added in Goryeo era.
In the result of examining functions of Cheoyongmu in Joseon period, Joseon period was the golden age of Cheoyongmu. Also, culture of Goryeo and Buddhism were declined and changed to Yeack ideology. Cheoyongmu was transformed and extended in Sunjong era. During the Sejong era, dance and music were become more significant. Therefore, the artistic function of Cheoyongmu was expanded in Joseon period.
In brief, Korean traditional dance which was formed from folk tale should not be neither emphasizes to study itself nor folk tale. Folk tale and traditional dance should be studied simultaneously, and also following researches are needed to focus on succession and viewpoint of reinvention.
