English as an intercultural language (EIcL) has been theoretically discussed in the applied linguistics profession. EIcL aims to create ‘multidialectical English speakers/listeners with intercultural insight and knowledge. Although theoretical discussions on EIcL are relatively at its inceptive stage, the present study examines factors affecting Korean university students’ perceptions of and attitudes toward EIcL and some in-depth ideological underpinnings underneath these factors. 60 students participated in the survey. Data include questionnaires and interviews. The findings indicate that most of the influencing factors for those supportive of inner circle Englishes were functional and stemmed from external forces. On the other hand, the majority of factors that influenced those supportive of EIcL was primarily internal and related to the students’ desire to take part in meaningful intercultural experiences. Pedagogical implications and suggestions are also discussed.
