It is evident that sound operation of architectural licensure system and quality of architectural practice in the United States of America is relying on the combined distinct roles of the National Council of Architectural Registration (NCARB) and the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The NCARB deals with the quality standards of architectural licensure and the system of operation of it, while the AIA exist to support the welfare of its member architects and practices. While the mission and perspective on practice of architecture for NCARB is different than that of the AIA, the AIA requires licensed architects to become its member. It is observed that these separate missions of organizations effectively help each other by exploring both the quality of licensure and the quality of professional practice as a separate realm. Also it must be noted that the NCARB’s continuous effort to meet with changing environments and developing needs has resulted in highly advanced format for license examination in America. The format and procedures for licensing examination have been changed in number of versions so far, and scheduled for another change of format in late 2016. By comparison, there are clear and urgent needs of improvement for Korean architectural examination system, not only to better support licensed practicing architects but also for the welfare of next generation of Korean architects in training.
