This paper is an attempt to understand Vernon Lee as a fin-de-siècle intellectual who tried to reconcile Walter Pater’s aestheticism with John Ruskin’s mixed discourses of art criticism, scientific observation and ethics, as well as a writer of original supernatural stories. In A Phantom Lover , the unnamed narrator-painter tells the story of Alice and William Oke, haunted by the ghosts from the 17th century.
For Lee, ghost is a metaphor for the ‘Pasts’ which many Victorian intellectuals tried to evoke to cope with irrevocable past and unpredictable future. And, for Vernon Lee, aesthetic experience means the empathy, feeling into the alterity of the objects, which is the only way of enhancing life of the human species. Alice Oke sees ghost as a thing from the past to disturb her existence as a Tory landowner’s wife and even to transform it into something new which embodies her repressed desires. William Oke gets obsessed, and troubled with his wife’s scandalous engagement with the past, to bring his own destruction as well as his wife’s. The nameless painter tries to capture Alice’s ephemeral, exquisite beauty in vain, while maintaining his position as an artist as a critic, telling the story to an unnamed listener. Instead of capturing Alice’s beauty on his canvass, the narrator only completes his discourse on the failure of Alice’s portrait, revealing the clashes between the act of ‘seeing’ and ‘knowing’, between the object and its representation.
A Phantom Lover is one of the early attempts of Lee’s which shows her desire to get over the aestheticism of Walter Pater and to find a way to combine the ethical and aesthetic experiences. It is also one of the good examples of Lee’s efforts to construct her aesthetic theories in a more popular mode of narrative, a ghost story.
