The purpose of this study is to make an analysis of poetic metaphors represented in the poems of elementary school textbooks in order to propose their structure through the conceptual metaphor theory. According to the traditional view, figurative language such as metaphor and metonymy has been considered literary or rhetoric device, and it was basically thought of as a matter of language. Contemporary research on figurative language has claimed that it is not just a matter of language, but essentially a conceptual phenomenon. Our ordinary conceptual system, in terms of which we both think and act, is fundamentally metaphorical in nature. The results are as follows; First, conventional metaphors are usually automatic, and unconscious mappings, and pervasive in everyday language. Second, literary metaphors are normally just creative extensions and elaborations of these conventional mappings. Third, metaphor as a poetic device is primarily based on human experiences and extended from everyday conventional metaphors. Metaphors are to a large extent culture-specific, because experiences are not necessarily the same in all cultures. The most abstract human metaphors seem to have as source domains universal physical notions, know as "image schemas", which are acquired on the basis of our earliest bodily experiences.
