Initiation process means that a protagonist becomes mature through first contacts or experiences during a particular time. This term has been used too broadly to define or classify it in a specific or explicit way. American scholar Mordecai Marcus divides it according to the power of initiation-tentative, uncompleted, and decisive. However, such a classification method is focused mainly on the form. Thus, this paper aims to suggest a new typology based on contents- come-of-age type and dramatic transition. The come-of-age type derives from the traditional Bildungsroman of Europe, and the dramatic transition type usually belongs to the modern literature of England and America. I discuss the characteristics of each type in a diachronic way. After that, to prove its efficiency, two works of Star Trek-The Motion Picture and First Contact are selected and analyzed as a comparative studying material because they have enough contrast. As a result, the coming-of-age type is distinguished from the dramatic transition type in the speed of the flow of story, the mood, narrator’s position, supporting character’s role, the clarity of turning point, the need for stimulants, and the extent of conflict between the hero/-ine and the society or the characters.
