To learn German as a foreign language, the learner must be exposed to rich German language input. Learning German in Korea means that the classroom is often the only environment that provides the opportunity to hear and practice German. This is one of the main reasons why classroom discourse should be carried out in German. However in beginner classes, one cannot be expected to fully abstain from using the learner’s native language or a lingua franca. Nonetheless, these should be gradually replaced by German so that only the German is used in later stages of language learning. Some techniques suitable to accomplish this reduction in the use of the native language are the so-called “sandwich technique” proposed by Butzkamm (2003), and using pictures or monolingual explanations instead of translations, to help the learner acquire the ability to guess unclear meanings and express themselves even with minimal knowledge of German vocabulary.
