The study of Japanese history in Korea did not start in full force until the mid-1990s. Because of the memory of Japan’s colonial rule, historians did not pay attention to the study of Japanese history. Only exception was the subjects related to the Korean-Japanese relations. However, with the installment of regular courses in major universities in the early 1980s, Japanese history became a part of historical studies in Korea and students majoring in Japanese history began to appear.
Mid-1990s saw the growth of the number of Japanese history specialists and academic organizations in the field. After that, Japanese history became one of the fasted growing field in historical studies in Korea.
About the half of academic articles in Japanese history is about modern and contemporary Japan. In particular, the modern period is the most studied among other periods. It was because of Japanese imperialism and its colonial rule. Consequently, modern Japan has been studied from various area, starting from political history to cultural and social.
The trends and theories have changed and grown as the twentieth century moved into a new one. Studies of modern and contemporary Japan have reflected theoretical changes from the critique of nation-state to modernity. However, the deteriorating relationship between Korea and Japan on the history issue is demanding historians to search for a new ground and paradigm for the understanding of modern and contemporary Japan.
