There are cases that one form written in Chinese characters has various meanings and usages depending on the dialect or language. One of the causes is that an early form with a certain meaning spread to different locations and developed into various meanings according to the time and region. This essay probes the various meanings of the form wòchuò 齷齪collected from Chinese texts and dialects as well as in Korean, and trace the semantic developments of the word. In early Chinese texts wòchuò implies the meaning of ‘narrow.’ In Korean it means ‘harsh and tenacious,’ while in the Southern Min dialects it means ‘irritating and depressing.’ In Post-Medieval Chinese texts as well as in some Chinese dialects wòchuò means ‘filthy,’ and in Standard Chinese based on the Northern dialects it has a meaning of ‘to have nasty personality.’ These meanings at a glance do not seem to be related. In consideration of early written forms and definitions of the word, I argue that the various meanings of wòchuò were derived from the meaning ‘to hold tightly and draw near.’
