Currently, Korea is facing economic slump and urban decline problems due to the population decrease in local cities and especially, industrial and economic competitiveness of county-based cities and functions as self-sufficient cities are weakening, with the continued outflow of population to surrounding large cities.
In order to prevent this regional decline and retain cities, there is a need to consider a life zone-type network city that strengthens the connectivity between regions. For developing an efficient network between regions, it is required to understand the strengths and weaknesses of regional settlement environments.
According to the network city theory, cities with specialized characteristics are connected to each other and the network system between cities can bring external effects and lead to agglomeration economies by improving urban functions. This also assumes that when each city is involved in the network, cooperative and interacts, economics of scale can be achieved and network system-based cities are developed.
This study analyzed the present status of regional settlement environments by setting life zones, based on regional traffic and then analyzing indicators related to settlement environments. It is thought that this analysis can be used as a reference for creating a sustainable settlement environment and regional life zone policy by showing the functions to be supplemented and improved for construction of a network between regional life zones.
