This study has written to observe Sangpogye(the system and management of the mutual-aid society to cover funeral costs) of Youchi(有治) in Jangheung(長 興). To analyse it, 15 documents of Sangpogye of Youchimyun in Jangheunggun, Jeollanamdo were used as research data. They mainly include the analysis of the accounts of Sangpogye of Youchi and the reconstitution of conditions of membership, duties, mutual aid-expenditure, possessions, financial management, and so on. Hyangyak(鄕約) was restored by JangheungBusa(長興府使) for each myun in Youchi region in Jangheung, Jeollanamdo in the early 19th century. In addition, Donggyes(洞契) were operated for each village, and the mutual-aid societies, large and small, were organised for each rural community in the lower part of it. In other words, self-governing communities connected with <myun (面)-li(里)-chon(村)> was managed on the basis of administrative units. By the way, the strife between the military and the People's army were raised in Youchi region in Jangheung in 1950. Thus, Youchi region was under the military control during the day, and was under the People's army at night. Meanwhile, all parts of Youchi region was burnt and the residents of it were scattered in 1952. When the Korean War was over, they came back to their village and repaired it, and established or restored Donggye and Sangpogye. The analysis results of the data show that Youchi Donggye took charge of administrative affairs as ‘a voting organ’ to discuss various matters in the village, and that Youchi Sangpogye aimed at mutual-aid among members and controlled commodities and costs during a funeral.
