This study aims to analyze the Identity of Seventh-day Adventism in the historical background of American Religious History in the 19th Century. It has been based on the method of historical study. In this century, Seventh-day Adventism was formed as a new alternative religious movement in America. At that time, American Society was developed the Second Great Awakening Movement and the Holiness Movement based on the post-millennialism. Many of American Protestants promoted the social reforms in accordance with the influence of the movements. In this religious-historical situation, the Millerite Movement of Jesus’ second coming was originated.
William Miller, a founder of the movement, led the eschatological movement based on the pre-millennialism rather than the post-millennialism which was the trend of the times. The Advent Movement, however, failed and most of the Adventists had a disappointing experience as a result. Among the disappointing Adventists, a little flock which overcame the great disappointment through the re-exam of the prophecy has appeared in history. They realized some important doctrines such as Heavenly Sanctuary(by Hiram Edson), Seventh-day Sabbath(by Joseph Bates), and Spiritual Gifts(by Ellen Harmon). After these special beliefs were crystallized with Adventism, they created a Christian community which has been called as Sabbatarian Adventists. This community organized a Christian denomination, Seventh-day Adventists, in 1860’s.
The Seventh-day Adventists has inherited a variety of faith traditions, such as Puritanism, Wesleyanism, Deism, Restorationalism, and religious Radicalism. These faith traditions have been influenced by the American Christian traditions of the 19th century. The universality and distinctiveness of the Identity of Adventism have been illustrated by these faith traditions.
