The verbal headwords in Yuzhi Qingwenjian(御製淸文鑑, preface written in 1708) show variation in their verbal endings: -ha, -mbi, and -habi. This paper aims to clarify the difference among them by adopting the concept of aspectual classes. Aspectual classes can be divided firstly into two classes: the atelic class which does not have an end point and the telic class which does. The atelic class again consists of the STATE class and the PROCESS class, which can be defined as being static and dynamic, respectively. The telic class can be divided into the event PROTRACTED class and the event MOMENTANEOUS class, depending on the presence of temporal extent for the preparatory process towards the end point (Filip 2012: 728). Based on these aspectual classes, ha-ending headwords are classified into the MOMENTANEOUS class while mbi-ending headwords are classified into the other three classes, with the presence of an end point and temporal extent being as the criteria of classification: the events that ha-ending headwords refer to have an end point, thus requiring no preparatory process towards it, while the events mbi-ending headwords refer to do not have an end point, or if they have one, no emphasis is put on it because it is the preparatory process that is focused. In addition, ha- and mbi-ending headwords contrast in respect to transitivity and agentivity. The events habi-ending headwords refer to include two telic classes, the event PROTRACTED and the event MOMENTANEOUS, seemingly because these headwords do not focus on the preparatory process, but on the continuing end state. In Yuzhi Qingwenjian, habi-ending headwords describe static events, along with adjectives and static verbs. Unlike the other two, habi-ending headwords imply changes.
