This paper attempts to show the ways that editors of HC(漢淸文鑑) had modified the Manchu annotations, of which original things were in ZQ(御製增訂淸文鑑), by the deliberate manners rather passive or mechanical. The purpose of the modification might be summarized as for concision and correctness. The first section of this paper examines the way of reduction. Annotations of HC have more simple and less redundant sentences than ZQ. The remaining words after the process of elimination of superfluous phrases used to be recomposed in natural or better sentences. The remaining part of the paper considers the way of alteration. There are often the cases the annotations themselves were altered. In these cases, they had been replaced by those of unlisted headwords from ZQ. Moreover, the annotations of HC often have the different words from them of ZQ. Some of them were replaced by the words representing more clear meaning. And some would be resulted from the attempts for distinction within the similar words. However, the attempts would not always be successful. For example, gaijara seems to be the irregular form in conjugation of the verb gaimbi. But editors of HC would have considered them as different verbs, and tried to distinguish between them. And some findings in this study could contribute to the research for the editions of ZQ. It is beyond the scope of this study to examine the unintentional or typographical errors both HC and ZQ.
