Many of the current activities of Thailand’s emerging animation industry are not broadly known. In this paper, current trends will be discussed through five case studies that showcase the shaping, shifting, and redefining of Thai animation. The Monk Studios [1] is expanding by encouraging individual directors to make personal short films that are acclaimed in the international festival circuits. Wishberry [2] studio, whose history parallels many in the industry, specializes in preschool heart-crafted animation and social networking cartoons using the popularity of emojo as opportunities for ideology reinforcement. Sputnik Tales [3] is a social animation studio and organizes the Thailand Animator Festival, an annual animation competition that is expanding and developing social consciousness of animation content for the new generation of animators. Roo Su Flood [4], a DIY cultural collective, became a social phenomenon in public service announcements through its pop-up studio that produced responsible social animation that clarified misinformation related to the flood of 2011. Vuja De [5] is part of a growing trend of studios bringing skills and experiences from the big studios at home and abroad into more personalized works as well as interacting and collaborating to show off their skills collectively.
