Since disposal was put forward by Wang Li, scholars have done many studies on disposal semantics in various dimensions and worked out causation disposal and sufferance disposal, which maintain the semantic feature of either unhappiness or sufferance. However, both of them cannot be taken as the representative of disposal on account of that they are extremely special types of disposal.
We hold the opinion that the typical disposal, known as narrowly defined disposal remains the expressive function of unhappiness or sufferance that was well embodied in literatures of Yuan dynasty when disposal was flourishing. The story-telling script generated in Song dynasty became more widespread and better developed in Yuan dynasty. “This kind of works written in vernacular is not only of differential style but also drove revolution in article, thus it was a real big change along fiction history.” Lu Xun said.
Out of modern Chinese literatures, colloquialism and vernacular literature are the best illustration of linguistic change. This paper aims at uncovering the performance of narrowly defined disposal with unhappy and suffering semantics in the literatures of Yuan dynasty through profound study on disposals in Story-telling Script of Yuan Dynasty.
