The community welfare center is one of the most common work settings for generalist practitioners who are trained through BSW curriculum in Korea. With increase in the number of centers and diversification of their programs, higher level of professional aptitude among the practitioners is increasingly expected. In light of such trend, his study aims to explore the core competencies required for social workers practicing in community welfare centers. Focus group interviews, along with an online survey, were conducted on mid-level managers who have been working as social workers in the centers for at least 5 years. Analysis of the collected data has resulted in the following. First, reflection skills, practice skills, relationship skills, and insight emerged as the core competencies. Secondly, their passion, enjoyment, and sense of pride from their profession, as well as a strong vision shared by their organization were required as basic premise for enhancement of the core competencies in social workers. And finally, a systematic supervision and provision of new information and education opportunities were found to be an important part of their support system. Based on these findings, for enhancement of social workers’ core competencies, it is recommended that support to the social workers be provided both at individual and agency levels.
