A major trend of contemporary literary criticism focuses on gender, sexuality and femininity. This can also be applied to current Yeats studies. The poetic sequence “A Woman Young and Old” succeeds in representing feminine desires, both physical and spiritual, by covering up the poet’s real self with the voice of the woman young and old. Bold assertions of feministic positions and womanly features replace or transform wistful and abstract romantic emotions in Yeats’s early poems. Wearing a linguistic mask, the female poetic persona who is the poet himself frankly delivers the understanding of women and female experiences that the modern Irish society tries to control by means of religious conventions and patriarchal national traditions. The woman narrator deconstructs the existing stiff stereotypical ideas on women and projects new images of an ideal male-female relationship and union. The subject penetrating all poems of the sequence is the affirmation and advocacy of female sexual desires. Besides, Yeats emphasizes that all human desires can not be controlled by conventions and rituals and then, criticizes the Irish society and Catholic church through feminine voices. The poetic expressions of the female persona‘s sexual cravings challenge the repressive society in the Free State in 1920s. So, the sequence reminds us of the social and epochal significance of gender roles and femininity in the newly liberated Ireland. It also urges contemporaries to change their perspective on femininity and to genuinely understand democratic feminine sexuality. As the poet is correctly aware of both gender and love in the contemporary conservative Ireland where Catholicism dominates, he can versify diverse desires and sensual pleasures, eroticism and female body, and sexual discourses.
