The relationship between China and Russia in the 21st century has drawn much attention from pundits for an ever deepening level of cooperation, especially on the defense front. The level of defense cooperation between the two countries contends that the prospect of alliance is now difficult to discount. Furthermore, China in its long history has had only three alliances, all of them with Russia, and this also facilitates Chinese discourse on alliance with Russia. Proponents of this alliance argue that China needs this for the purpose of strengthening its leadership commensurate with its international profile. Opponents doubt the will power and capacity of the two nations. This article argues the case for the slight prospect of alliance in the context of strategic cooperative partnership and historical evolution of the bilateral relationship. Strategic implications of deepening China-Russia cooperation for Korea are also examined and policy considerations recommended.
