There are so many soviet army monuments in Northeastern China and North Korea. Most of them has been constructed during 1945 and 1957. This paper examines, first, the historical and commemorational times and the change of significance of them, second, the effects and influences of soviet monument culture on Chinese and North Korean memorial culture in the context of East Asian Cold War studies.
The early soviet army monuments were ascribed the meaning of liberation and mourning, but, the later monuments were distinguished by the victory and friendship around the pullout of the soviet army from Dalien. The monument culture of soviet army gave a model of commemoration culture in two countries including the victory and friendship tower. The emergent conflict between the USSR and the PRC as well as North Korea’s Juche doctrine, both emasculated the political significance of the monuments in Northeastern Asia, but the end of the Cold War has been those revitalized as the site of the collective memory of cooperation and friendship, unlike their counterparts in Eastern Europe.
