Discussions on 『Gogi』 are still in progress, and the claim that it is a historybook brought out by an anonymous monk before the publication of Samguksagihas recently been raise. Thus, now is the time to review the differences andrelevance with later materials based on the existing discussions in that the effectsof 『Gogi』 on later literature appear broadly. Under the acceptance of the claimthat it is the historicalbook written by a particular person, not a “record of thepast” in a general term, this paper is aimed at investigating the similaritiesbetween 『Gogi』 and 『Samgukyusa』. The macroscopic similarities between 『Gogi』and 『Samgukyusa』 are found in the point that they convey history through folktales, and the similarities were extracted from four categories in this paper. 『Gogi』 conveys myths on the founding of countries from Gojoseon to PostBaekje, and it deals with surreal and inexplicable phenomena without hesitation, which seems to serve as a basis for 『Samgukyusa』 to be equipped with the viewof surreal description. 『Gogi』 also presents the practices of faithful belief inBuddhism from the people of lower classes, leading to the aspect that emphasizespractical Buddhism through a wider range of cases in 『Samgukyusa』. 『Gogi』contributes to further raising the Buddhist origins of the Korean Peninsula byproviding the history of earlier Buddhism which is in conflict with the officialBuddhist history. Upon agreeing to the fact, 『Samgukyusa』 actively records andintroduces folk tales that demonstrates pure Buddhist land. The Silla-centeredperspective is also common in both books, which is not irrelevant to the conditionthat those who compile the books were monks of Goryeo, an ancient Korean state. Of course, the two history books retain the separate individualities. Nevertheless, both of them pursue common epic display within a big framework. The fact that『Samgukyusa』 followed 『Gogi』 from several aspects shows 『Gogi』 has a eatsignificance in its presence.
