The Korean immigration to Brazil, which officially started in 1963, was in the form of agricultural immigration but the Korean immigrants settled down not in rural communities but in urban areas. The Korean immigrants established their homes in the city of Sao Paulo and there the Korean literary circles was established. They started literary works in the general art and literature magazines such as 『Baekjo』, 『Moogoonghwa』 and so on and with the publishment of 『Tropical Culture』 in 1986 they established Korean Literature in earnest. The purpose of Tropical Culture was to pass down Korean traditional culture as the first-generation Korean immigrants, to instill it into descendants, and to perform the role of the bridge between Korean culture and Brazillian culture.
The characteristics of Korean literary works in Brazil as the marginal men of diaspora are expressed through three types as below. First, the most generally expressed characteristic is wandering and yearning for their home due to immigration life. Secondly, self-consciousness and searching for ego identity in the heterogeneous culture was embodied. Third, the consciousness of re-immigration searching for a new life and reverse immigration to Korea or Brazil was expressed. Wandering and yearning for their home were conspicuously revealed especially in the genre of poetry. Nostalgia for their home plays a healing role for Koreans living wearisome days. Consciousness and searching for ego identity which is conspicuously revealed in the genre of an essay are related to the fundamental problem of Koreans’ finding roots. In Korean literary works in Brazil led by the first?generation Korean immigrants, there is hardly any works which try to show any tendency of assimilation in the Brazilian society and culture. In Korean literary works, consciousness of re-immigration and reverse immigration was expressed according to Brazilian political and economic situation. Consciousness of re-immigration and reverse immigration is a kind of a proof that the Korean immigrants in Brazil consider Brazil as not a destination but a temporary place in life.

1963년부터 공식적으로 시작된 韓人들의 브라질 이민은 농업이민 형식이었으나, 그들은 농촌이 아닌 도시로 진출하여 정착하였다. 상파울루를 중심으로 삶의 터전을 잡은 한인들은 그곳에서 한인문단을 형성하였다. 종합문예지인 『백조』, 『무궁화』 등을 통해 작품 활동을 시작했던 한인들은 1986년 창간된 열대문화 를 계기로 본격적인 한인문학을 구축하였다. 『열대문화』의 창간 취지는 이민 1세대들이 자신들의 모국인 한국의 전통문화를 계승하고 그것을 후손들에게 심어주기 위해서였고 한국문화와 브라질 문화의 架橋역할을 하기 위해서였다.
디아스포라(diaspora)의 경계인으로 살아가는 브라질 한인들의 작품성향은 다음과 같은 세 가지 형태로 표출되었다. 첫째, 가장 보편적으로 표출된 성향으로서 이민생활로 인한 流浪과 望鄕意識이 두드러졌다. 둘째, 이질문화 속에서 자신의 정체성에 대한 자각과 탐색이 구현되었다. 셋째, 새로운 삶을 찾아 떠나는 재이민과 다시 한국이나 브라질로 되돌아오는 역이민 의식이 재현되었다.
유랑과 망향의식은 초기 작품에서 두드러지게 표출되었으며, 특히 시 장르에서 잘 드러나고 있다. 재브라질 한인문학 작품에서 드러난 망향의식은 낯선 이국땅에서 고달프게 살아가는 한인들을 치유하는 역할을 하였다. 수필 장르에서 두드러지게 나타났던 정체성에 대한 자각과 탐색은 한인들의 뿌리 찾기에 대한 근원적인 문제와 관계된다. 이민 1세대를 중심으로 전개된 브라질 한인들의 작품에서는 브라질 사회와 문화에 同化하려는 태도를 보인 작품이 거의 없다. 한인들의 작품에서 재이민과 역이민 의식은 브라질의 정치적, 경제적 상황에 따라 달리 표출되었다. 이와 같은 재이민이나 역이민 의식은 재브라질 한인들이 브라질을 삶의 종착지가 아닌 일시적인 삶의 터전으로 인식하고 있다는 또 다른 반증이 된다.
