The objective of this study was to investigate the association among walking activity (WA), vigorous physical activity (VPA), and metabolic syndrome (MS) risk factors in Korean adults. A total of 16,871 (Male: 7,261) Korean adults participated in the cross-sectional study. We measured WA, VPA and MS risk factors including waistcircumference (WC), fasting glucose, triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure. Results showed that subjects who participated in WA and VPA had significantly decreased WC, TG and increased HDL-C compared to subjects who didn"t participated in WA and VPA. When subjects were divided into four groups according to WA and VPA, subjects who didn"t participated in WA and VPA had 1.33 times higher the prevalence of MS compared to subjects who participated in WA and VPA after adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, and smoking. In addition, subjects who participated in only WA had 1.25 times higher the prevalence of MS compared to subjects who didn"t participated in WA and VPA after adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, and smoking, And subjects who participated in only VPA had 1.18 times higher the prevalence of MS compared to subjects who didn"t participated in WA and VPA after adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, and smoking. There were differences in the prevalence of MS between VPA and WA. In conclusion, our study showed that participation in WA and VPA are important factors for the prevention of metabolic syndrome in Korean adults.
