This study investigates the effects of intertextuality, particularly of quotation, on the construction of national identities and ideologies, by analyzing news texts of a national conflict. Specifically, we compare the news reports on the territorial conflict over Dokdo between Japan and South Korea covered by The Japan Times and The Korea Herald. This study examines how the English-language newspapers of the two nations convey their own national ideologies and diplomatic messages through selection of source, content, and mode of quotations. Each newspaper, by selecting, modifying, and contextualizing external voices, creates its own national discourse to serve to justify the national positions and interests. The present study discovers that the two different historical and political perspectives on the issue are manifested effectively through selective use of quotation as a discourse strategy.
