Karl Marx’s manuscripts about “demystifying calculus” clearly show that that he did not reject the idea of using mathematics as a tool to represent economic relations. Furthermore, Marx thought that mathematical concepts should correspond to reality. Mathematical modelling, however, is always premised upon the “vision” of the economist and therefore, it cannot include all of reality, as the literature on the monetary expression of labor time (MELT) demonstrates. Given this, Marx’s mathematical manuscripts should be accepted as incomplete texts open to various interpretations.
