Recently, a series of studies which explore magazines such as Changbi, Moonji focus on the point where various discourses, which were shared among intellectuals in 1970s, are formed and communicated through these magazines. As an extension of these studies, this thesis aims to have a new understanding of the significance of Moonji elitism of the age which advocated ‘critical attitude’ and ‘theoretical method’. Moonji, which took ‘meta-critical perspective’, tried to use the space of the magazine as a path to encourage autonomous and voluntary communication of various discourses rather than providing a particular agenda authoritatively. Criticism as an attitude or aiming for theory as a method which Moonji emphasized shows ‘secularized intelligence’ as a unconscious alliance rather than conscious participation toward reality. This thesis understands the concept of ‘secularization’ or ‘secularized’ in two meanings. Daily meaning is the attempt of intellectual to be involved in reality while realizing or being aware of his position within his world, and more theoretical meaning could be understood as the will to deconstruct the consecrated authority given to not only the intellectual himself but also particular knowledge as an intellectual. In other words, the term ‘secularized intelligence’ could be used to embrace two meanings, realizing his position as discomfort considering the reality as an intellectual and enjoying the absolute freedom of reasoning without following particular theory. Moonji contributed to expanding the discussion of the age on the social role of intelligence in that it questioned and agonized about the form of intelligence in the reality of Korea where the freedom of criticism, which is the essence of intelligence, was greatly damaged. Furthermore, this intelligence discourse of Moonji provided an opportunity for practical intelligence, which became a mere means, to reflect on itself either as cooperation or resistance.
