This study focuses on the daily life improvement crusade and the workshops which were Joseon as the means by the colonial authorities in order to enhance the colonial governance, improve daily life, and to solidify the foundation during the colonial period. The workshops and lectures were the means for grass-roots enlightenment which were most generally conducted. They were the methods for notifying major policies of the colonial Japanese authorities. Using workshops to actualize their goals, the colonial authorities specifically and clearly stated the policies in the daily life improvement crusade and the agrarian improvement crusade to enhance and reorganize the overall everyday life of the colonial Joseon people.
The colonial Japanese authorities intensively conducted dyeing workshops in order to abolish the white-clad tradition, which they believed would not be voluntarily accepted among the Korean people. The dyeing workshops were the actual programs to lead voluntary changes by instructing dyeing techniques and to appease Koreans who opposed the abolishment of the white-clad tradition. On the other hand, the programs conducted at the same time, such as cooking, western sewing and knitting workshops, etc., which were led by various media, young men"s associations, and women"s associations, were connected with the movement that tried to instruct modern techniques and to improve eating and clothing habits.
The everyday life-related workshops conducted during the colonial period were all based on enhancing and reorganizing everyday life, which was the ultimate motto of the daily life improvement crusade and the agrarian improvement crusade. However, the conducting methods and administrating organizations were each different by its policy objectives. The participants for the workshops showed active, positive, and voluntary responses in acquiring modern techniques, such as cooking and sewing. However, the responses regarding the workshops with its very foundation is connected to the white-clad abolishment policy can only be verified by the unilateral statistics collected by the organizations. In conclusion, the workshops during the colonial period had positive effects in the instruction and the use of modern technology. However, they showed double-sidedness intension to induce colonials" compulsory changes and support and spread their colonial policies.
