Multiculturalism is the term which carries various oppositions and conflict-laden heterogeneity brought about by globalization and cultural pluralism. These debates on multiculturalism have posed some challenges for the context of education as well as Christian education. How can we provide a culturally responsive model for Christian education? How can we maintain the balance between being committed Christians and being true to their own culture? A significant task of Christian education in a multicultural society is to design an educational context in which students are given support and challenge in learning to deal with differences and others. Based on three different theoretical approaches to multicultural education (critical race approach, citizenship approach, and intercultural approach) and an educational model based on the narrative passage of the cross-cultural encounter between Peter and Cornelius in Acts, this article presents a culturally responsive as well as biblically legitimate model for Christian education, based on equality, openness and relationality. A Model of multicultural Christian education may help Christians to move toward unity in diversity, to reflect their own cultures in cross-cultural encounter with other cultures, and to build up the global citizenship in a globalized and culturally pluralized society.
