This essay aims to investigate how institutional racism affected the widespread of violence and shaped the public memory for the white privileges in the case of the Los Angeles riots of 1992. For the critical analysis of the riots, this study utilizes Reinhold Niebuhr`s universal sin of pride as well as the theories of Middleman Minority and the public controls. This interdisciplinary study proposes the Korean merchants, though victimized, to take initiatives to transform the social institutions for the reconciliation and peace among different racial groups, while the Korean immigrant churches encourage them to participate in the transformational processes with the symbols and narratives of the Jesus Christ. This research paper provides helpful guidelines for Korean churches to prevent racial conflicts in the future of multiracial/cultural Korean society.
