This essay is to explore the ideas of the Early Church fathers on the Story of Susanna. The story is one of the three additions to the Book of Daniel. Of course, the Susanna was included in the Septuagint. Susanna, in the story, was a noble Jewish lady living in Babylon. Two evil elders living in her community formed an intrigue against her. They charged her before the council and she was sentenced to death. Daniel becomes hero by calling for a new trial. He uncovered the discrepancy between the two elders` stories. Susanna was saved and the elders were executed. While the Story of Susanna was rejected from Jewish leaders after the council of Jamnia, the early Christians embraced it as a precious religious literature. After the appearance of Origen`s Hexapla, the Theodotion`s version of Susanna replaced the original version in the Septuagint. Early Christian fathers portrayed Susanna as mainly three types in the Bible. Some fathers like John Chrysostom and St. Ambrosius viewed Susanna as a type of Christ. Her suffering is similar to that of Jesus. In addition, Susanna was regarded as a type of Mary, Mother of Jesus. To praise the Virgin`s purity, Susanna`s chastity was often noted by early church writers. Furthermore, Susanna was considered as a type of the church. St. Hyppolitus is the representative for this view. While Susanna is a type of church, her husband is a type of Jesus. Her bathing represents believer`s baptism and the oil she used symbolizes the Holy Spirit. Particularly, two evil elders implies the two groups who persecute the church: the Jews and the Gentiles. To encourage or to exhort their communities, church leaders often used the Story of Susanna in their sermons and writings. Above all, the Story offered spiritual lessons of patience in times of trials and final victory of saints, especially for the early Christians who faced severe persecutions.
