Even though he failed to become a successor to Wesley because he passed away earlier than Wesley, John Fletcher has been regarded as the first Wesleyan theologian and was designated by Wesley as his successor. The reason why Fletcher has been called the first Wesleyan theologian is that as a contemporary to Wesley, he not only interpreted, defended and advocated for Wesley`s theology against critics in the Reformed traditions, but also had an influence on them. Besides, he was a man who told people of the doctrine of Christian perfection which was Wesley`s theology. He successfully made them focus on it. However, rather than being treated as the first Wesleyan theologian, Fletcher has been judged as a theologian with his own theological logic. This is because unlike Wesley, as an activist of the Holy Spirit he emphasized Pentecostal tongues and insisted on the concept of Christian perfection by the Holy Spirit. However, we cannot decide rashly whether Fletcher took his own logic diametrically opposed to Wesley`s by emphasizing the Holy Spirit, or whether he expanded his own theology based on Wesley`s theology as a supplement to Wesley`s view. If Fletcher had stood distinctly apart from Wesley, Wesley would not have named Fletcher as his successor and would not have consented to Fletcher`s writings. Accordingly, this article has compared and analyzed the common grounds and differences between Fletcher`s conception of Christian perfection centered on the Holy Spirit and that of Wesley, based on Christian perfection which is a central concept of Wesley`s theology. Also, this article has clarified that although there are a few differences between them, Fletcher`s notions were not totally different concepts from Wesley`s, but points that Wesley had agreed with and approved. Furthermore, this article has illuminated how Wesley`s theology and Pentecostal theology can be connected, and has suggested a research project on how Wesleyan theology can accept Pentecostal tongues, embrace Pentecostal theology, and develop further. Finally, this article has dealt with the disputes and contributions of Fletcher as a true Wesleyan theologian, mentioning the common grounds and differences between Fletcher and Wesley.
