The uprising in the American colonies posed serious problems for John Wesley who looked upon all the world as his parish. He believed that the Americans were being used by certain English leaders for deadly purposes. Wesley stressed his fears of an English populace exasperated almost to madness. He could not avoid reflecting that the luxuries of the English rich and general profaneness of all England had perhaps led God to send the trouble on England.
The main political creed of John Wesley was his king and his church. Wesley defined liberty in religious and civil terms. The former was the ability to worship God as one whishes. Civil liberty entailed the right to enjoy our lives and fortunes in our own way. Wesley thought the English had all the liberty they could desire. He regarded that arguments against the king were unjust.
Wesley urged to return to God. He also felt that thanks should be given to God and the King for such freedom. There was the closest connection between his religious and his political conduct. Wesley said if he does not love the king, he can not love God. He could not see anything but evil in the effort of the colonists to free themselves. So, Wesley did not hesitate to denounce anyone who supported the rebellion.
